Abstract |
Abnormal contraction of the levator scapulae muscle (LSM) occurs frequently in patients with spasmodic laterocollis. However,
selective denervation of the LSM has never been reported in Korea. The case report features details of using a direct anterior
approach to the posterior triangle of the neck for selective denervation of the LSM in a case of spasmodic laterocollis. The LSM was accessed anteriorly via the same incision used for denervation of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. The approach was a safe
superficial neck dissection. Assessment scales showed excellent postoperative results. We found that the anterior approach for
denervation of the LSM for intractable laterocollis was both effective and safe. Therefore, selective denervation of the LSM from the anterior approach is considered an important option for treatment in selected cases of spasmodic torticollis with a laterocollis component. |
